Do you often feel like time is just flying by and there is never enough of it get everything you want to accomplish done? Do you feel that you do not have time for meditation?
Are you constantly behind on deadlines and feeling overwhelmed or distracted? Does the thought of taking personal time seem impossible because you have so much going on?
If your honest answer to those questions was yes, it’s time to change your relationship with time, and start your daily meditation practice.
Why? Meditation doesn’t take time, it gives time.
When we meditate, we attain a different state of consciousness that is totally different from our waking state. It’s simply a change in perspective from an outward state of exhaustion toward an introspectively focused mental state. When our mind is clear, relaxed and focused we are able to use time more efficiently. The natural state of the mind is to wander. When we meditate we find an inner sense of stillness and one-pointed awareness which has the power to silence the wandering mind. In meditation you are fully awake and alert, but not focused on the external world around you. Instead, you turn inward examining the relationship you have with yourself.
The first step is acknowledging that there is a space within you that you can retreat to at any moment. Understand that no matter how fast things seem to be moving around us, we can find internal stillness. Meditation teaches us to let go of unrealistic expectations, and find a sense of calm. With this tool, we become more motivated, confident individuals with clear goals and desired outcomes. When we commit to a meditation practice, we commit to the goal of knowing ourselves. When we fully understand our current state of being, we can systematically create the best outcomes for ourselves in any situation. Stillness is a universal requirement of the human body that allows our internal organs and our brain to function at their maximum potential.
When we feel connected, time is on our side, and we don’t struggle against it, we simply use our time more wisely. Are you ready to begin your meditation practice?
Start by stopping. Find a comfortable seated or reclined position and start to feel the connection between your physical body and the floor. Become fully aware of where you are, and allow yourself the opportunity to be present. Let go of any thoughts, worries, or ideas about what you should be doing right now, and simply get connected to who you are and how you feel in this moment. Check in with your breath, and notice if you are creating the same amount of space on both your inhales and your exhales. Do a quick body scan and recognize any areas of tension or fatigue in the body. Without judgment, visualize sending your conscious breath directly into these spaces that are calling for your attention. Discover a deep rooted, grounded and centered place, and allow your meditation to resonate from within this space.
The time is now. Take the opportunity to do nothing and just be in stillness, free from thought, for as long as it takes to really feel connected to who you are in this moment right now. Close your eyes and deepen your breath.
Tip for beginners: Find your zen: Count from 10 to 1, over and over again in your head. If you lose count, start again at 10. Continue counting mentally for as long as you can. This helps to exhaust the mind.
