It really seems too simple, but when you stay hydrated, you instantly upgrade your health. We are all primarily made of water. This makes drinking enough water, or staying hydrated, a critical piece of staying healthy! Our bodies, as a whole, are made up of 75% water, while our brains and nervous systems have as much as 90% water composition. Water is the most obvious, yet elusive element to good health, and staying hydrated is the easiest way to maintain your health and energy. Yet research suggests that up to 75% of Americans are walking around in a chronic state of dehydration! What a sluggish, low-energy place to live!
On a cellular level, most people are not properly hydrated, even if they feel otherwise. There are two significant reasons for this common problem; lack of supply and insufficient water quality are the main contributors to inadequate cellular hydration. Your body monitors water fluctuations so intensely that every organ, cell, hormone and neuron is affected by changes.
To improve your health immediately, increase your daily water consumption to at a minimum half your body weight in fluid ounces (e.g. at 140 pounds, that would be 70 ounces, which is a little more than half a gallon). If you are active, working out more frequently, and/or live in humid or dry climates, it is beneficial to drink more.
How to Maintain Health and Energy with Water
A simple way to keep track of fluid ounces, especially in the beginning, is to measure it. Check the number of ounces held by your most-used glasses, mugs and bottles, and track the number of times you fill up each day. Be open to writing down these numbers if that helps you remember how far you’ve come or see how far you have to go.
At first, this may seem like a lot to drink every day; but your body is not functioning optimally if water consumption is consistently low. Culturally we may have trained our bodies to survive on less water, but in turn, we have forgotten the body’s ability to thrive with proper hydration. The more you increase your water consumption, the more you will notice your body adapts and utilizes it to your advantage. Don’t want to feel like you are always running to the bathroom? Excessive urination, or other ways your body reacts to the increase, will quickly subside as your cells learn they do not have to ration water the way they had to in the past. Hang in there for the transition. I cannot emphasize the importance of drinking water enough.
You will notice your energy levels level out, as well as experiencing better elimination, deeper sleep, mental clarity, improved skin and eyes, normal blood pressure, and overall, less aches, pains, inflammation and swelling.
Quality of water is also extremely important for cellular hydration. Today, most tap and bottled water ends up getting mixed with a variety of chemicals at treatment facilities including fluorides, chlorines, PCBs and more. No thanks! I recommend that you limit or stop drinking water that is (1) unfiltered or (2) bottled in soft plastic. Use distilled water or reverse osmosis water and add a pinch of unrefined Himalayan or Celtic sea salt to it before drinking. The mineral blends in these salts will ensure that you are getting the proper electrolytes necessary for optimal hydration.
